2017 Awards

AWARDS PRESENTED BY THE GREENWICH SCHOLARSHIP ASSOCIATION 2017 

On June 8, 2017, the Greenwich Scholarship Association and more than 100 local sponsors distributed more than $550,000 to 127 recipients during the 45th annual GSA awards ceremony. The sponsors of the awards included civic groups, local businesses, families with memorial awards and individuals providing scholarships to students from Greenwich schools for their first year in college.

1       THE BEATRICE ELDRIDGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Given by a former member of the Guidance Department at GHS, the Beatrice Eldridge Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a student planning to enter a “helping profession” such as teaching or guidance.

2       THE GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1942

The award is given on behalf of the Greenwich High School Class of 1942 celebrating the 75th anniversary of their graduation.  Many in this class left to enlist in WWII days after graduation in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor during their senior year of high school. Some members of this class lost their lives before they even got a chance to create it, but there were those who returned to Greenwich to lead full and productive lives.  This scholarship honors the legacy of the Class of 1942 and gives assistance to someone affected by the sacrifice of military service as they plan for their future.

3       THE GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2006 SCHOLARSHIP

Recognizing the merit of hard work and providing a thoughtful reminder of how much there is to look forward to.

4       SANDRA A. BOLES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Sandra Boles worked in the GHS Comprehensive Support Program and was a supporter of GHS athletics. She worked at Cardinal Baseball Camp and was a friend of Mike Mora.

5       THE ANN AND NANCY MICHAUD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship honors the memory of Ann Michaud who was a beacon of love and positive energy and her daughter, Nancy, whose generous spirit was beloved by her family. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has overcome personal challenges or a student who plans to work with the physically challenged.

6       EMILY CATHERINE FEDORKO FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Emily Catherine Fedorko Foundation honors the memory of Emily, who we lost in a tragic boating accident on August 6, 2014, just a few weeks before she would have entered her junior year at GHS. The foundation’s mission is to increase awareness and education especially regarding boating and towing safety. The mission of this scholarship is to honor a student who reflects the qualities that shone so brightly in Emily, namely her academic achievement, her enthusiasm for sports, including lacrosse and gymnastics, and her passion for the arts. She had boundless energy and was loved as a daughter, sister and friend.

7       ALAN CAPASSO GHS PTA AWARD

The Alan Capasso GHS PTA Award, in honor of retired Headmaster Capasso, is granted to a student who has significantly contributed to GHS by way of their leadership and/or community service, is in the top 25% of the graduating class, and is committed to attending a four year college or university.

8       THE GREENWICH LIONS CLUB

The Greenwich Lions Club Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is visually impaired or interested in pursuing a degree in nursing, eye care or medical school.

9       GREENWICH FIREFIGHTER’S ASSOCIATION LOCAL 1042 SCHOLARSHIPS

The Greenwich Firefighter’s Association Local 1042 Scholarships are awarded to five students whose parents have served our community as fire personnel and where the students themselves have demonstrated a commitment to community service.

10     FLORENCE BONVENUTO SCHOLARSHIP

The Florence Bonvenuto Scholarship is awarded to a student with a good academic record who demonstrates an interest in theater, music or the arts. The award is in memory of Florence Bonvenuto.

11     THE WOMAN’S CLUB OF GREENWICH SCHOLARSHIPS

The Woman’s Club of Greenwich awards are given to five deserving students who have maintained a GPA of 3.3 to 3.8 along with a commitment to community service.

12     ROBERT D’ELIA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Robert D’Elia Memorial Scholarships are awarded to one male and one female Greenwich High School senior in memory of Robert D’Elia, a 1968 GHS graduate. These scholarships are awarded to deserving students who share Mr. D’Elia’s love of life. He loved music, sports, the theatre and being with family and friends.

13     DIANE M. INTRIERI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP for  the Visual & Graphic Arts

The Diane M. Intrieri Memorial Scholarships are awarded to two students of the Graphic & Visual Arts Program. The scholarships are awarded in memory of Greenwich resident Diane M. Intrieri who was an exceptionally talented graphic and visual artist.

14     BECKY STONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Becky Stone Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an individual who has achieved success both in and out of the classroom, has shown strong motivation and work ethic by generating meaningful remuneration from employment, which funds have been or are available to defray some of the cost of education, and has dedicated their time to volunteering/mentoring in a service organization. The scholarship is given in memory of Becky Stone who was the Coordinator of the GHS Media Center and initiated the highly regarded Senior Internship program.

15     THE MICHELLE YEE SCHOLARSHIP

The Michelle Yee Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who attended Julian Curtiss Elementary School and has demonstrated a commitment to their academic studies. This award is in memory of Michelle Yee who was a student at Julian Curtiss, excelled in her studies and showed a sincere concern for those around her.

16     THE MATTHEW YEE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This award is made to a recipient showing accomplishment and leadership skills, especially one who is a dedicated swimmer or a member of the Boy Scouts.

17     THE HOPETOWN SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Hopetown Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has been committed to their academic studies and has excelled in either athletics or the arts. The Hopetown Scholarship Fund results from the generosity of John and Suni Unger in the hopes that their fund will have an impact on the lives of young adults by giving them the opportunity to experience the rewards of higher education.

18     THE BYRAM SCHOLARSHIP

The Byram Scholarship is presented to a deserving student who attended New Lebanon Elementary School in the Byram area of Greenwich.

19     RUDY’S LIMOUSINE – DOMINIC CONETTA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Rudy’s Limousine-Dominic Conetta Memorial Scholarships are awarded to football players and cheerleaders in memory of Dominic Conetta. Football was an integral part of Mr. Conetta’s life, both playing and coaching as well as his involvement with the Cheerleading Exhibitions.

20     JOHN GILDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The John Gilder Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with an interest in the cinematic arts. This award is given in memory of John Gilder, a GHS and Fordham University graduate who worked in production for the television drama Law & Order and was a devoted supporter of the NY Yankees.

21     JOHN ZUMBO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The John D. Zumbo Memorial Scholarships are awarded to students who are pursuing higher education with an interest in a fitness or health-related course of study, including physical therapy, medicine, nutrition, sports training, or other supportive fields. These awards are given in memory of John Zumbo, a graduate of GHS who overcame personal challenges to succeed in his own business providing physical fitness training and nutritional guidance to others.

22     CHRISTOPHER T. HARRIS, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Christopher T. Harris, Jr. Memorial Scholarships are awarded to students who have excelled in the music program and intend to pursue music as their life’s work. This award is given in memory of Christopher Harris who was an avid music lover and studied music engineering.

23     MONIQUE DALAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP of the Greenwich Police Emerald Society/Greenwich Police Social Club

The Monique Dalan Memorial Scholarship of the Greenwich Police Emerald Society/Greenwich Police Social Club is awarded to a deserving female student at GHS who attended Western Middle School with plans to attend college or university and major in French or Mathematics. This award is given in memory of Monique Dalan, a graduate of GHS.

24     ORTHOPAEDIC & NEUROSURGERY SPECIALISTS SCHOLARSHIP

The Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists Scholarship is awarded to a student who has excelled in both academics and athletics. This award results from the generosity of ONS which has developed relationships with many student athletes over the years. ONS presents this award as their way of giving back to this community.

25     GREENWICH REFORM SYNAGOGUE AWARD

The Greenwich Reform Synagogue Award is awarded to a deserving student who has been committed to community service.

26     GLOBAL ORGANIZATION FOR PEOPLE OF INDIAN ORIGIN – CT CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

The Global Organization for People of Indian Origin – CT Chapter (GOPIO) presents a scholarship to a student serious about their education.

27     MARGARET MURPHY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In loving memory of Margaret Murphy, a lifelong citizen of Greenwich, who was kind, caring and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates Margaret’s compassion and plans to pursue a career helping others.

28     JANE C. BAUSMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Jane C. Bausman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with an interest in the performing arts. The award is in memory of Jane Bausman who had a passion for life, an enthusiasm for field hockey and a true love for the arts.

29     RICHARD M. AIDINIS, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Richard M. Aidinis, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is in memory of Rich, who was a 1997 graduate of GHS, CMS and Cos Cob Elementary School. He was an avid fan of both the NY Yankees and the NY Giants. He loved boating and had a deep passion for fishing on the Long Island Sound and in the waters offshore of Montauk. He was a son, brother and friend who had a generous heart and a spirit of life that will be remembered through this scholarship.

30     MICHAEL JON GREENBERG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Michael Jon Greenberg Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student of GHS with academic ability and an interest in sports. This student is one who, through friendships and involvement with others, has had a positive influence on the GHS community, someone who has a willingness to take risks and has a zest for life. This award is given in memory of Michael Jon Greenberg who died in a boating accident in 1987 after completing his sophomore year at GHS.

31     JESSICA LEE BRETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Jessica Lee Brett Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student by the Brett family in loving memory of their daughter Jessica.

32     EDNA ANDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP sponsored by FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF GREENWICH

The Edna Anderson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in memory of Edna Anderson by the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich.

33     GREENWICH EXCHANGE FOR WOMEN’S WORK

The Greenwich Exchange for Women’s Work Scholarship is awarded in memory of Edna Anderson, who founded the organization in 1901, and is given to a female student who has been dedicated to community service and helping others.

34     SECOND CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

The Second Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship Scholarship is awarded to a student who has been an active and upstanding member in their church.

35     ROBERTA DAVIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP for an Outstanding Student in Social Studies

The Roberta Davis Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who has been outstanding in the subject of Social Studies, in memory of Roberta Davis, a teacher at GHS who touched many lives through her inspired teaching.

36     IVEY, BARNUM & O’MARA, LLC SCHOLARSHIP

The Ivey, Barnum & O’Mara, LLC Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated a commitment to their academic studies and a dedication to community service. This scholarship has been established by the law firm of Ivey, Barnum & O’Mara, LLC to commemorate their 50th anniversary of service to the Town of Greenwich. The scholarship rewards those students who have demonstrated a dedication to volunteerism and the benefits their community service confers on the town’s many charitable, educational and social service organizations.

37     MORRIS S. & FLORENCE H. BENDER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Morris S. & Florence H. Bender Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a student who will attend a two year college. The award was established in memory of Morris Bender to continue the Benders’ support of medical, educational, and artistic projects.

38     GREENWICH MULTIPLE LISTING SCHOLARSHIP

The Greenwich Multiple Listing Award is given to a deserving student by the Greenwich MLS, an organization supported by over 1,000 realtors in the Greenwich area.

39     ROBERT S. CURTIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

of the Greenwich Association of Realtors

The Robert S. Curtis Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates the ability to balance a good grade point average with extracurricular activities. The scholarship is awarded by the Greenwich Association of Realtors.

40     CHARLES W. JENSEN, III, D.M.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Charles W. Jensen, III, D.M.D. Memorial Scholarship is awarded to one deserving GHS student who has excelled in the science program. This award is given in memory of Charles Jensen, a successful dentist, who was a graduate of GHS.

41     JUSTIN SCOTT BROWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Justin Scott Brown Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in memory of Justin, a graduate of GHS who was involved in cutting edge music and writing, utilizing computers and other emerging technologies.

42     THE HERTZIG FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

The Hertzig Family Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has shown potential for success. This award is given with the conviction that equal educational opportunity is essential for the future of our society and our nation.

43     GREENWICH ROTARY CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS

The Rotary Scholarships are awarded to three deserving students who are in the top 20% of the graduating class with a GPA of 3.4 or higher, and have demonstrated a commitment to community service. These awards are given by the Rotary Club who believe in ‘service above self.’

44     RED MEN’S HOME ASSOCIATION OF GREENWICH, CT. INC. AWARDS

The Red Men’s Home Association of Greenwich Scholarships are awarded to individuals who have maintained a strong academic record, are civic minded and involved in community service, and have shown leadership skills and goodwill. The Red Men’s Association scholarships reward those students who exhibit the ideals the Red Men represent: Freedom, Friendship and Charity.

45     GREENWICH HOSPITAL AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP

The Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has either volunteered with Greenwich Hospital’s Auxiliary or is pursuing an education in a health related field.

46     JEWISH FAMILY SERVICES – ROGATH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Jewish Family Services of Greenwich Rogath Scholarships are awarded to deserving graduating students of GHS who are of the Jewish faith.

47     DR. JOHN C. WILSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded in memory of Dr. John C. Wilsey, a long time surgeon and former Chief of Staff at Greenwich Hospital, to a student with plans to pursue a career in medicine.

48     BRIAN THOMAS MACKEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In memory of Brian Macken who died on January 18, 2011. Brian was a 2009 graduate of GHS and a sophomore at Indiana University. He was a talented athlete who loved to play ice hockey. He and his teammates won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Champion in his senior year at GHS. He will be remembered for his large circle of friends, his passion for life and his ‘Brian Macken Hug.’

49     THE TOD CLONAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR ALL-AROUND EXCELLENCE

The Tod Clonan Memorial Scholarship for All-Around Excellence is awarded to a student who has achieved academic success, demonstrated a commitment to community service, and has earned the respect of his/her peers and teachers. This award is given in memory of Tod Clonan who encouraged kids to strive for academic excellence, while enjoying extracurricular arts and athletic programs supporting their communities, while pursuing higher education.

50     THE TOD CLONAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE

The Tod Clonan Memorial Scholarship for Athletic Excellence is awarded to an athlete who has distinguished him/herself as a strong leader, a team player, and a good sportsman. This award is in memory of Tod Clonan who devoted much of his life to catching and who believed that participation in sports gives kids not only the joy of the game but friendships, discipline and opportunities to demonstrate leadership.

51     VIN GIULIANI SCHOLARSHIP FOR GRAPHIC ARTS

The Vin Giuliani Scholarship for Graphic Arts is awarded to a deserving GHS student who has excelled in the arts and given in memory of Vin Giuliani who was an internationally acclaimed commercial artist whose work hangs in many museums including our own Bruce Museum. A 1948 graduate of GHS, he went on to Pratt Institute of Art with scholarship aid.

52     ALLAN KITCHEL, JR. MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLARSHIPS

The Allan Kitchel, Jr. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students interested in the study of the environment, ecology, conservation, forestry or botany. These awards are given in memory of Allan F. Kitchel, Jr. a lifelong resident of Greenwich who established the Films for Conservation Foundation and also helped establish the Greenwich Conservation Commission and ‘Save the Wetlands’ movement.

53     TOMMY CONELIAS, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Tommy Conelias, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in honor of Tommy Conelias, Jr. who was a gifted athlete and beloved son and brother to his family.

54     KIWANIS KEOGH SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Keogh Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a commitment to community service along with academic achievement. The scholarship honors the memory of John Keogh, founder of the Kiwanis Club of Greenwich.

55     THE GREENWICH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION IN MEMORY OF TOD CLONAN AND BOB HAUGEN

Tod Clonan and Bob Haugen were founders of GBA who believed in building character and community through sport. Greenwich Basketball Association Scholarships are awarded to four deserving students who participated in GBA during high school and who demonstrated good character by putting their team first and by making a positive impact on other players.

56     GEORGE BARRADAS GLENVILLE MAVERICK MEMORIAL AWARD

In memory of George Barradas who founded the Glenville Mavericks in the early 1970s and actively coached until his death in 2001. The Maverick organization is located in Glenville at the Western Greenwich Civic Center; the field has been officially renamed the ‘George Barradas Memorial Field’ in his honor. His motto: ‘football under one arm and the books under the other.’

57     SUSANNAH CHASE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Susannah Chase Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a GHS female who participates in varsity sports, and whose life exemplifies, like Susannah’s, an indomitable spirit, compassion for others, and an appreciation for the beauty around her.

58     AMERICAN RED CROSS SCHOLARSHIPS in memory of Dwight H. Renfrew III and John E. Schmeltzer IV

The American Red Cross Scholarships are presented to deserving youth volunteers in memory of Dwight H. Renfrew III and John E. Schmeltzer IV.

 59     FRIENDS OF GREENWICH POINT in honor of Mary Raymond

The Friends of Greenwich Point Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated strong academic achievement, leadership skills and a commitment to the environment. This commitment is reflected in the student’s decision to pursue a course of study in environmental science as well as in his/ her community service experiences. This award is presented in honor of Mary Raymond.

60     CHICKAHOMINY REUNION COMMITTEE

The Chickahominy Reunion Committee Scholarships are awarded to deserving graduates of Hamilton Avenue Elementary School who have demonstrated a commitment to their academic studies.

61     THE JOHN DESMOND OTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In memory of John Ott, a 1987 graduate of GHS and member of their first Rugby Team, he received a BS from New York University and went on to do business in Latin America. This award goes to a student who participated in sports or has a connection with Latino culture.

62     JAMES A. BRANCA MEMORIAL – REPUBLICAN TOWN COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP

The James A. Branca Memorial-Republican Town Committee Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated an interest in political science. This award is given in memory of James Branca, the Greenwich tax collector from 1974-1988 and a distinguished member of the Republican party.

63     DAVID THEIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated leadership through public service. By dedicating endless hours to the citizens of Greenwich, David Theis, former Selectman, touched the lives of many.

64     GARDEN CLUB OF OLD GREENWICH SCHOLARSHIP

The Garden Club of Old Greenwich Scholarship is awarded to a student who intends to pursue an academic career in Environmental Studies. The Garden Club recognizes the value of supporting the education of the future leaders of our society.

 65     CAMILLA KELLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Camilla Kelley Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has been committed to their studies and has overcome numerous obstacles in order to pursue a course of higher education. This award is presented in memory of Camilla Kelley who assisted many in need in her own quiet way, never seeking the spotlight. This award is supported by her friend, Steven B. Fox and his family.

66     CARYN U. JACOBY/CHRISTIAN J. A. URCIUOLI SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Caryn U. Jacoby/Christian J. A. Urciuoli Scholarship Fund was established to reward students from ethnically diverse backgrounds who have demonstrated good citizenship and success amongst their peers. The Fund supports the belief that allowing and celebrating the students’ success is a long term solution to combating negative bias and stereotyping.

67     JOSEPH & MARIE NEMEC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Joseph & Marie Nemec Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in memory of Joseph Nemec, an immigrant to this country, who died in 1984, and his wife Marie.

68     GREENWICH DEMOCRATIC TOWN COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF DTC CHAIRMAN DAVID ROBERSON

The Greenwich Democratic Town Committee Scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown commitment to community involvement and has demonstrated a concern and sensitivity to others. The award is given in memory of DTC Chairman David Roberson.

69     THE DALY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Dolores C. Daly Scholarship is awarded to a student who has graduated from Julian Curtiss Elementary School, in memory of Dolores C. Daly who was a much loved first grade teacher at Julian Curtiss for 16 years.

70     KELLY ROMANIELLO MEMORIAL AWARD

This award is given in memory of Kelly P. Romaniello, a Greenwich High School graduate and outstanding baseball player. He was tirelessly dedicated to coaching and mentoring aspiring baseball players.

 71     THE CHARLTON TRUST SCHOLARS

These students have been selected because they demonstrate commitment to pursue higher education as Charlton Scholars, in recognition of the original foundation that provided the funding for what is now the Greenwich Scholarship Association.

72     GRAYSON GARB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Grayson Garb Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has been committed to his/her academic studies and has an interest in aeronautics. This award is given in memory of Grayson who was a graduate of GHS and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

73     THE GREENWICH DENTAL SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

The Greenwich Dental Society Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with plans to pursue a career as a dentist, dental assistant, hygienist or lab technician.

74     THE SILVER SHIELD LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Silver Shield Law Enforcement Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with plans to pursue a career in law enforcement/criminal justice.

75     DR. WILLIAM & MRS. EDUVINA HENNIGAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Dr. William & Mrs. Eduvina Hennigar Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student with plans to pursue a degree in medicine or science at a four year college or university. This award is presented in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Hennigar, who as active members of the Greenwich community, encouraged young students to pursue higher education specifically in medicine and science.

76     LINDA HOENIG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Linda Hoenig Scholarships are awarded to several deserving students who have attended Western Middle School and have come from families with a parent(s) who works for the Town of Greenwich, as a teacher, fireman, police personnel or at Greenwich Hospital. These awards are given in memory of Linda Hoenig who was a student at GHS.

77     CHRISTOPHER J. CHUTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Christopher J. Chute Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who is an athlete and has been committed to their studies. Chris played on the baseball and basketball teams while he was a student at GHS.

78     ELIZABETH MATTHEWS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Elizabeth Matthews Memorial Scholarships are awarded to deserving students with plans to study Nursing, Medicine or Biological Sciences, or the sons/daughters of a nurse or member of the medical community. The award is in memory of Elizabeth Matthews who, as a nurse, dedicated her life to caring for others.

79     GREENWICH OLD TIMERS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association promotes youth athletics in Greenwich. Its scholarships are awarded to three well rounded student athletes. One of these awards is in memory of David Theis, a former selectman of the Town of Greenwich and longtime board member of the association. It is given to a student with a significant history of community service. The Michael Sandlock Scholarship for baseball is in honor of Mr. Sandlock, a longtime Greenwich resident who played professional baseball for the Braves, the Pirates and the Dodgers.

80     THE JOSEPH PIRO, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS of the Greenwich Old Timers Athletic Association

The Joseph Piro, Jr. Awards are given by the family of Joseph Piro to a deserving student with plans to attend an engineering or vocational institute.

81     BRUNO VACCAREZZA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In memory of Bruno Vaccarezza, a 2012 graduate of GHS. He was a kind, polite, sensitive young man with a quick smile who was very mechanically talented. He died in a tragic car accident in 2013.

82     THE O’NEILL SCHOLARSHIP

The O’Neill Award is awarded to a deserving graduate of GHS with plans to pursue a career in teaching or plans to attend a technical school and has demonstrated a strong work ethic through their academics, services or athletics.

 83     GREENWICH HOUSING AUTHORITY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Greenwich Housing Authority Scholarships are granted to deserving students who have demonstrated a commitment to their academic studies and to the furtherance of their education.

84     CHICKEN JOE’S SCHOLARSHIP

The Chicken Joe’s Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student and football player from GHS. This award is presented by Joe Marini as a symbol of his gratitude for his years as a student at GHS and as a member of the football team.

85     CHICKEN JOE’S RIDE FOR KIDS SCHOLARSHIP

The Chicken Joe’s Ride for Kids Scholarship is awarded to a deserving female GHS student who has been committed to her academic studies and active in sports at GHS. This award is funded by long-distance charity bike rides organized by Joe Marini.

86     SUNNY HILL CHILDREN’S CENTER SCHOLARSHIP

The Sunny Hill Children’s Center Scholarship is awarded to a student who has overcome personal challenges or one who intends to pursue a career in the education of students with learning disabilities.

87     GREENWICH JAYCEE CHARITABLE TRUST FUND AWARDS

The Greenwich Jaycee Charitable Trust Fund Awards are given to deserving students who have demonstrated a commitment to their academic studies.

88     LINDA & STEVEN B. FOX FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

The Linda & Steven B. Fox Family Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has been committed to their studies. It is made possible by Steven B. Fox Jewelers demonstrating sincere gratitude to the Greenwich community by supporting our graduating students.

89     CHARLOTTE AND RAYMOND MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Charlotte and Raymond W. Marshall Scholarship Fund provides college scholarships for students who exhibit scholastic ability and leadership qualities. The Marshall family were residents of Greenwich and active benefactors of the town.

 90     THE VELAJ FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Velaj Foundation Scholarship is given to a female student who has participated in sports in a leadership role, has maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher, is involved with theater/arts and has volunteered her time to her community. This award is due to the generosity of the Velaj Foundation.

91     THE LYMAN-REYNOLDS SCHOLARSHIPS

The Lyman-Reynolds Scholarships carry on the tradition of our first sponsors and go to students who represent the spirit of the Greenwich Scholarship Association.

92     IDELLA STUART HEMPSTEAD TRUST

Hempstead Scholarships are awarded to several deserving students who have demonstrated a commitment to their academic studies.

93     MARTHA MOXLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Martha Moxley Scholarship is awarded to a deserving GHS female student who has demonstrated her commitment to furthering her education. This award is given in memory of Martha Moxley who was a student at GHS.

94     CONNECTIONS SCHOLARSHIP

The Connections Scholarship is awarded to a deserving female student who has demonstrated a commitment to community service. This award results from the generosity of Connections, an organization of women who have shown leadership in the professional, business and volunteer sectors.

95     THE JOHN G. VRABEC SHADOW FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The John G. Vrabec Shadow Foundation Scholarships are awarded to deserving students who have attended New Lebanon Elementary School and/or currently reside in Byram, CT. These scholarships are awarded in memory of John Vrabec who attended New Lebanon School and lived his entire life in Byram, his final years with his beloved dog, Shadow.

96     ALLYSON S. MASCALI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Allyson S. Mascali Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has overcome personal challenges in memory of Allyson, a graduate of the GHS class of 1990.

97     KATHLEEN KEENE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In memory of a much-loved math teacher at GHS, the Kathleen Keene Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student strong in math.

98     WATARU JOHN NARITA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Wataru John Narita Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who has maintained a GPA of 3.3 or higher and an interest in the field of biological science, aeronautical science or aviation. This award is given in memory of Wataru John, a 1989 graduate of GHS, who studied aviation and was an avid skier and rugby player.

99     THE DANISH-AMERICAN CLUB OF GREENWICH SCHOLARSHIP

The Danish American Club of Greenwich was founded over one hundred years ago to serve as a social center for the Danish community and welcomes all who are interested in preserving the Danish language history and culture. The club awards this Scholarship to a deserving student who plans to attend a four year college or university.

100  OSGOOD LICHTY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Osgood Lichty Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has demonstrated commendable personal qualities and academic achievement with the intent of pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English, Literature, Writing or Education. This award is given in memory of Jean Lichty, an editor for Harcourt, Brace & Jovanovich, and Ruth Lichty, a teacher of English and middle school principal.

101  HALLENBORG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Hallenborg Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with high academic standing and a well rounded GHS experience. This award is in memory of Walter Hallenborg who was a principal of Central Junior High School, now known as Central Middle School.

102  COUNTESS FRANCES THORLEY PALEN-KLAR SCHOLARSHIPS

The Countess Frances Thorley Palen-Klar Scholarships are awarded to deserving students who are graduating with a GPA of 3.5 or higher in memory of Countess Frances Thorley Palen-Klar who was a resident of Greenwich and a strong supporter of students pursuing higher education.

103  TREND MAKER CAPITAL LP SCHOLARSHIP

The Trend Maker Scholarships are awarded to five deserving students. These scholarships are thanks to the generosity of the Vitale family / Trend Maker.

104  GREENWICH ORGANIZATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS SCHOLARSHIP

The Greenwich Organization of School Administrators Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has been in the Greenwich Public School system from grades K-12, who has demonstrated a commitment to academics and shown him/herself to be motivated and industrious.

105  GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SCHOLARSHIP

The Greenwich High School Class Scholarship is awarded to a deserving fellow student who has had a positive influence on the GHS community.

106  THE GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL PTA SCHOLARSHIPS

The Greenwich High School PTA Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to their studies, shown leadership skills and have been actively involved in service to their community.

107  THE PTA COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIPS

The PTA Council Scholarships are awarded to deserving students from all of the elementary and middle schools in the Town of Greenwich.

108  GREENWICH SCHOLARSHIP ASSOCIATION AWARDS

Scholarships from the Lyman-Reynolds and Charlton Trusts are given to students selected because they demonstrate commitment to pursue higher education in recognition of the two foundations that provided the funding for what is now the Greenwich Scholarship Association.
