In memory of George Barradas who founded the Glenville Mavericks in the early 70's and was active coaching right
up until his death on October 25, 2001. The Maverick organization is located in Glenville at the Western Greenwich Civic Center;
the field has been renamed officially as the George Barradas Memorial Field in honor of George.
His motto was "football under one arm and the books under the other."
JANE C. BAUSMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Jane Bausman who graduated from GHS in 1986 and died suddenly in 2000. Jane “always kept a close group of classmates in touch and up to speed on each other’s lives.” She was an “inspirational member of the GHS field hockey team.” She developed a love of the arts after college that she pursued privately and professionally.
JEANNE BELLES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Jeanne Belles, a health and physical education teacher at GHS since 1972. She established and coached the varsity dance team, coached the girls gymnastics team and served as senior class advisor.
MORRIS S. AND BRENDA H. BENDER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Dr. Bender was born in 1892 and graduated from Columbia University with a medical degree in otolaryngology. He and his wife never had any children, and were great supporters of various medical causes, as well as the arts and Jewish organizations. They believed in supporting those who overcome great obstacles in their lives, be they personal, financial, or family related.
ROBERT A. BENOIT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Robert Benoit, a life-long resident of Cos Cob who died January 1, 2010.
He graduated GHS in 1971, and worked for Sikorsky Aircraft for 30 years culminating in his position of Quality Assurance Specialist
working both domestically and abroad. Bob respected learning and was self-taught and knowledgeable in many areas.
He had an infectious good nature, able to see the humor in the world around him and in himself.
JAMES L. BRANCA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of James Branca who was tax collector for the Town of Greenwich for twenty-four years (from 1974 to 1998).
For 24 consecutive years, he served not only this town office with "distinction and compassion," but also the Republican Party.
His concern for helping others is shown in this scholarship started in his memory.

In memory of John Bria who graduated from GHS in 2003 and died in January, 2004. While a student at GHS, John played first the guitar and then the electric guitar. His playing developed into a passion as he spent much of his time writing, music, lyrics and vocals, planning to enter the field of recording arts.

excited by cutting-edge music and writing that utilizes computers and other emerging technologies.
SUSANNAH CHASE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Susannah Chase, who graduated from Greenwich High School in June of 1992. While a student at the University of Colorado, Susannah was assaulted and died of her injuries. As a student in the Greenwich Public Schools, Susannah participated in many athletic endeavors. One of her favorites was the Riverside Run in which she was a frequent winner of her age category. At Greenwich High School, Susannah played many varsity sports including women’s soccer, field hockey and track. Susannah possessed a gift for seeing beauty in everything around her and particularly chose the University of Colorado because of its abundant natural environmental beauty. When not in school she enjoyed hiking, music and drawing. Susannah’s tireless energy was reflected in her athletic abilities and commitment to education.
RAYMOND CHICKANIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Raymond Chickanis who died on July 2, 2003. For 30 years he was a diving coach at Greenwich High School from which he graduated in 1950 having excelled in springboard diving and cross-country running. He attended Ohio State University and was a diving champion there. He served in the Korean War and was a member of the U.S. Army swimming and diving teams. He also served on the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting.
CHRISTOPHER J. CHUTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
In memory of their son Chris Chute who died in an automobile accident on August 21, 1987 while a senior at GHS. Chris excelled in basketball. 2004 marked the 17th annual giving of this award. This is not the same as the Chute award given anonymously through GHS.
THE TOD CLONAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS :
ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP, ALL-AROUND EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
This award is in memory of Thomas “Tod” O’Donnell Clonan who died March 29, 2000 (of a heart attack at the age of 52). He was a prolific writer and a community volunteer with a passion for sports, particularly baseball. For many years, he coached baseball and basketball for Brunswick, the YMCA, and the Boys & Girls Club. He was president of the Greenwich High School Diamond Club, a baseball organization, and secretary of the Greenwich Junior Babe Ruth League. He was a founder of the Greenwich Basketball Association. He worked for the United Nations and later formed Tod Clonan Associates, an advertising and production company. He is remembered by his friends for his exuberant spirit, his wittiness and his brilliant facility with the written word. Jeanette says” he was a brilliant and funny father, husband, coach, athlete, surrogate parent and friend who died in March of 2000. Todd devoted much of his life to encouraging young men and women to live life and play sports to the best of their abilities and believed that everyone should have a shot at going to college.”

Tommy was one of seven brothers and sisters who attended Hamilton Avenue School and loved sports, especially baseball and football. He was a member of on Banc Raiders, a football team and the Boys & Girls Club swim team. Tommy died in an automobile accident in May of 1998 at the age of nine.

In memory of Willard Hoyt who founded and sponsored the Hoyt Bruins, a Babe Ruth League baseball team in Greenwich for more than 30 years. He actively coached the team, was chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board and died in 1968.

In memory of Christopher Harris, a freshman at the University of New Haven and a 2010 graduate of GHS, who died January 8, 2011 at the age of 18. Chris was an avid music lover who both wrote and played. He was studying music engineering in college. At GHS he played football and rugby but spent most of his free time in music lab.

In memory of Joe Hartman who was active in Greenwich serving as Democratic Selectman and Chr. of the Democratic Party and a member of state boards of higher education and other boards. He was committed to community service and nurtured political activists. And in memory of his energetic wife, Ruth, who died in December 1995 and who began the foundation with his friends.
The Joseph and Ruth Hartman Foundation was established in 1983 to recognize high school students who have shown an extraordinary commitment to public or community service. Our hope is that by commending these students and providing them with a cash award based on the work they have already done, we will encourage them to contibue this work as they begin their college careers.

THE HOPETOWN SCHOLARSHIP FUND
When John and Suni (“Sunny”) Unger got married last March 4, 2006, they asked their guests to contribute to a scholarship fund instead of purchasing wedding gifts. These contributions formed the basis of the Hopetown Scholarship Fund. It is their hope that this fund will have an impact on the lives of young adults, giving them the opportunity to experience the rewards of higher education. John and Suni are excited to give back to their community on an ongoing basis with this annual scholarship award.

The Diane M. Intrieri Memorial Scholarship for the Visual and Graphic Arts was established in September, 2008 to perpetuate the memory of Diane M. ALLAN KITCHEL, JR. MEMORIAL FUND AWARDS -
Started in 1973 by Helen Binney Kitchel, now deceased, in memory of her son, Allan F. Kitchel, Jr. known as "Tim". He died in 1972, was a lifelong resident of Greenwich and dedicated toward efforts in conservation. He established the Films for Conservation Foundation, a non-profit foundation to produce films for young audiences. He helped to organize the Greenwich Conservation Commission and initiated the "Save the Wetlands" movement and recycling.

In memory of Wataru John who died in an automobile accident on January 3, 1992 at age 21 while driving to Florida to study aviation at Florida Institute of Technology. He graduated from GHS in 1989 where he was a skier and a rugby player. He matriculated at Boston University where he studied until transferring for his junior year to become a pilot.
NATHAN L. NATHANSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Nathan Leon Nathanson who was born in 1917 on the Lower East Side, went to City College of New York and Columbia University and became a member of the American Stock Exchange and subsequently the Silver Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade and died March 2, 2003. Nat Nathanson believed that the greatest gift one could receive as well as give was the gift of education, because it was knowledge that opened doors and created opportunities. From 1966 to 2000 the family lived in Greenwich. Daughter Diana graduated from GHS 36 years ago (1968).

A writer and former NASA scientist, who became passionately involved in local politics, was killed on March 11, 2010,
at age 42, in an automobile accident upon returning home from an RTM meeting.

JOSEPH SCHIANO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In memory of Joseph Schiano who graduated from GHS in 2005. As a lance corporal in the US Marine Corps, he served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and was killed in an automobile accident on March 20, 2011. He is remembered for his pride in his country and his warm and generous ways. He could always make someone laugh. Also, he enjoyed working on his car, a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, spending hours tinkering.

In memory of Kathleen Robinson, a policewoman who died in 1990 and the first woman on the Greenwich police force.

In memory of Becky stone who died July 31, 2010. Until her retirement in 2009, Becky worked as coordinator of the GHS Media Center, where she began the highly regarded Senior Internship Program. She touched many lives in a positive manner and memories of her will endure.
CARYN U. JACOBY/CHRISTIAN J. A. URCIUOLI SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The purpose of this award is to show to the young people of Greenwich and their parents examples of success and good citizenship among students from the ethnic minorities population. It follows that giving ethnic minorities the opportunity to learn and excel is by far the best long-term solution to negative ethnic bias and stereotyping, and that education is one of the best avenues to that solution.

In memory of Michelle Yee who at the age of eight died in a drowning accident at Greenwich Point. She was attending Julian Curtiss School where she excelled in her studies and showed a sincere concern for others. In 2007, Michelle would have been a junior at GHS.
